I received a commission from a private party for a piece based on the Gyroid design, to be about 18" in size. We talked by email about how this surface dissects into square-like and hexagon-like tiles, and how to work with it to highlight that. I made this sketch:
Meanwhile I spoke with Steve at Reinmuth Bronze, and we thought about how to fabricate such an object in wax. The design we settled on is an assembly of identical modules. I designed the first one in CAD and had it fabricated in plastic by stereolithography.
At the foundry, a rubber mold was made from this master and 27 wax copies were pulled. They were assembled layer by layer into the complete structure:
This was dipped in a light slurry, then into coarser ceramic mixtures to form a hard mold around the wax.
Alley-oop! The mold is heated to fire the ceramic and remove the wax, then bronze is poured into it.
Meanwhile I had a black granite base fabricated by The Base Shop in Colorado.
Luckily, they fit together well!
Someday I'd like to go to New York and visit this object.
